在社会现实阻碍实现抱负时只有两种选择：退避或是反抗。那些当着小职员不求上进、整天抱怨生活乏味的青年就是退避者，他们或许平庸得舒适却被社会的前进所淘汰。能不断树立人生目标、决定实现人生理想的便是和于连有同样气概的反抗者。这个时代当然不欢迎虚伪的言行作为手段，但仍然需要对生活的热情来反抗空虚的度日。这样，于连悲剧性的结局除了昭示“个人反抗行不通”外，就有了对当今社会更实际的意义。
